The Breakout 13 Studio's Next Film Needs Two Players, and It Lands September 23

ALT Lab dates New World: Bonds of Shadows, a co-op interactive film set in 1941 Shanghai, launching day-and-date on Steam and mobile.

The studio that took Breakout 13 to Cannes has set the date for its most ambitious experiment yet. ALT Lab announced this week that New World: Bonds of Shadows (新世界:暗影成双) launches September 23, 2026, simultaneously on Steam and mobile.

New World: Bonds of Shadows 1941 Shanghai: a secret agent, a banker’s daughter, and a marriage of survival.

An interactive film for two

The premise is pure period thriller: in the “isolated island” Shanghai of 1941, a bank bombing entangles a cold-faced secret agent, Lu Weicheng, with a banker’s daughter, Yan Shu. Hunted by factions that each want them for different reasons, the two strangers fake a marriage to stay alive.

The structural bet is what makes it news. Bonds of Shadows is built for two players in co-op, you decide between you who plays the agent and who plays the heiress, and every choice lands on both of you. Single-player FMV asks what you would do; this asks what happens when the branch belongs to two people who don’t entirely trust each other. Date night, weaponized.

Why the release model matters

The launch is day-and-date on Steam and mobile, the release pattern this magazine has been arguing is the genre’s future ever since the biggest playable-series hits skipped the phone entirely. ALT Lab already runs a free-first-act model on iPhone with Break 13 Out; shipping its new flagship on both screens at once is the clearest statement yet about where this studio thinks the audience lives.

The game arrives after a long runway: a free prologue demo first surfaced at Steam Next Fest in mid-2025, followed by a closed beta in early 2026. It follows the studio ecosystem’s 2024 dual-protagonist film 谍影成双, a separate, single-screen title, and pushes the two-hander idea into genuinely shared control.
